Medjugorje is one of the world's best-known Marian shrines, where Our Lady has been speaking to the world through messages since 1981. The Queen of Peace calls us to conversion, prayer, fasting and peace.
On 24 June 1981 six young people (Ivanka, Mirjana, Vicka, Ivan, Marija and Jakov) first saw the Virgin Mary on Podbrdo hill. Mary introduced herself as the "Queen of Peace".
The apparitions have continued ever since. Some of the visionaries still receive messages from Our Lady every day.
Pope Francis authorised official pilgrimages to Medjugorje and appointed an apostolic visitor to the shrine.
The first apparition took place here in 1981. Bronze reliefs of the mysteries of the rosary line the path up the hill. Our Lady's white statue stands at the top.
A 520-metre hill topped by an 8.5-metre concrete cross, raised in 1933 for the 1900th anniversary of Christ's death on the cross. The 14 Stations of the Cross lead up to it.
